All applicants to the Student Scheme must submit three samples of journalistic style work with their online application. These can be sample print / online articles, broadcast projects or multimedia projects, or work that has previously been published or broadcast in media outlets (including college media outlets). Samples of print / online articles should be no longer than 1,000 words each. Samples of broadcast projects should not exceed five minutes each in duration. All work submitted should demonstrate the applicants’ journalistic capacity and their ability to undertake in-depth research.
Students must also submit a letter of recommendation from a member of staff from their academic institution. It should be written by a member of teaching staff who knows the applicant and who can confirm their suitability for the Student Scheme in terms of their ability to work under the direction of their mentor, on their own initiative in a developing country, and to produce a quality media project. It does not need to be any longer than two to three sentences. Download the template letter of recommendation from the downloads bar on right.
