Two Dublin student journalists have received funding under the Simon Cumbers Media Fund 2018 Student Scheme. The Scheme is designed to give third level students a greater understanding of development issues.
As part of their prize, the students will receive guidance and one-to-one mentoring from journalists within two of Ireland’s leading media organisations: TheJournal.ie and Newstalk. These media outlets will also feature the winners’ reports.
Shauna Bowers and Arthur Velker, who both completed journalism degrees at DCU this year, will travel to Sierra Leone on separate projects. Shauna will report on how the country is coping a year on from a mudslide that killed more than 1,000 people and destroyed 300 houses. She will be mentored by deputy editor of TheJournal.ie, Christine Bohan.
Arthur’s project, meanwhile, will look at the technological drive in the country to increase birth registrations, and the challenges for those who are undocumented. He will be mentored by Newstalk producer and presenter, Susan Cahill.
