Winter 2018 Fund recipient Susan Cahill explored the impact of rapid urbanisation, contrasting the opportunities and challenges for marginalised populations living in Freetown, Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa. It highlighted the impact of rapid population growth on urban infrastructure and services in Africa, including example: water systems, transportation, waste management, urban eco-systems and housing and will convey the enormity of the scale of the urban sustainability challenge.
Susan’s project was broadcast by Newstalk, and published on Newstalk.com. ‘Writing Johannesburg’, a one-hour programme special was broadcast on ‘Soundscape’ and can be listened back to here. ‘The Right to a City: Building Urban Resilience in Africa’, a one-hour radio documentary appeared on the ‘Documentary and Drama on Newstalk’ and be found here. Finally, ‘Diepsloot: The Forgotten Township’, a long-form essay was published on line and can be read here.
