Student Scheme recipient Shauna Bowers received funding to travel to Sierra Leone and examine life on the ground there a year on from the devastating mudslide that hit the capital city of Freetown in August 2017, killing over 1,100 people and destroying hundreds of buildings. Shauna’s work was published on TheJournal.ie. In the first of her pieces, which can be read here, Shauna meets people who have stayed living in their homes despite the unsafe conditions of the area. In the second of her pieces, which can be read here, she explores the vulnerability created among local communities in the wake of the disaster.
