Carol Ryan was a recipient of the winter 2012 round of the Simon Cumbers Media Fund. She traveled to North India to look at the Gulabi Gang, a women’s rights vigilante group, headed by leader Sampat Pal Devi. It was set up in 2006 to rally women in local villages and now has more than 20,000 members.
The group has stopped marriages, helped Dalits to access healthcare, tackled domestic violence and fought political corruption. The group has earned the respect of male villagers, the public and is feared by corrupt politicians.
