Fund recipient and photographer Marcelo Biglia travelled to Melilla in Morocco, with journalist Sara Creta, to document the women porters of Melilla, known insensitively as ‘Mules Women’, who used by smugglers to carry bundles of nearly 80kg across the Moroccan-Spanish border, on their backs. Marcelo’s project reflects the scale of the exploitation while highlighting the strength and resilience of the women.
Marcelo’s project was published in The Irish Times. Click here to read an online version.
An exhibition of photography from the project will also be publicly displayed; location and date to be confirmed.
