Nicola Cooke received funding under the Summer 2012 round of the Fund to travel to Tanzania to complete her piece on microfinance projects there, which began with NGO’s and SACCO’s (Saving and Credit Cooperative Organisations) in 1995. Initially the focus was on women and the alleviation of poverty, but because it is accessed through Tanzanian banks, much of the rural population – especially women – don’t actually fulfill criteria to access it, and so much of this credit is provided to them through NGO’s and co-ops.
Nicola’s piece, ‘Growing Together’ appeared on the cover of the Sunday Business Post on Sunday, 10th February 2013 and can be read here: http://bit.ly/YPLmts
Nicola also delivered a complimentary report on World Report on RT Radio One on the same day. Skip to 09.54 minutes to listen here: http://www.rte.ie/news/player/world-report/2013/0210/
