This piece was a profile of Uganda’s first ever elected white politician, Dr. Ian Clarke, and his business, International Medical Group (IMG). Clarke is a GP from a farm in Co Armagh, who this year became mayor of Makindye Division, Kampala. This feature followed him from his early days in Armagh to what he’s become today: founder/CEO of a successful international medical conglomerate, philanthropist, author of 2 books, and successful African politician. Clarke’s story is compelling in itself, but as he has dedicated his life to development in Africa, his story is also a way of exploring some of Uganda’s toughest problems through the eyes of a man working to solve them.
