New scheme for media students to be launched

A new scheme that will support media students to travel to a developing country to report on development issues will be launched at 12 noon on Tuesday, 11th October 2011 at the Irish Aid Centre, 27-31 Upper O’Connell Street, Dublin 1.

The scheme will be unveiled by the Minister for State for Trade and Development, Jan O’Sullivan.

The student scheme will form part of the Simon Cumbers Media Fund which was established in 2005 by Irish Aid in memory of Irish journalist Simon Cumbers. The fund is designed to promote quality media coverage of the developing world in the Irish media.

The new student scheme, which is being piloted during the 2011/12 academic year, will encourage students to develop a greater understanding of development issues. The prize will cover travel, accommodation and out-of-pocket expense for two students to enable them to travel to the developing world to research and produce their media project.

The Irish Times and Newstalk will act as media partners in this new student scheme.
